Well. Not a fun drive today. Began by backtracking as far as Flagstaff, AZ. That means we drove up the canyon again, but at least traffic was light at 0730. Flagstaff is kind of a nuisance, with some strange little intersections, and then it was onto the I-40 till noon. There were lots of trucks, and almost all of them were travelling at less than the limit by different amounts, so besides passing them, you had to worry about them passing each other.
Finally dove off at the Mojave desert, and it wasn’t like I remembered. We did have our picnic lunch there, and it was on the cool side (!) so we sat in the sun. Spent an hour driving through the desert on washboardy gravel roads, but really didn’t see much of interest. Some lizards. Some flowers.
Once out of the official park, the landscape doesn’t change a whole lot, and we encountered one construction zone that went on and on for twenty or thirty miles with a very low speed limit. Never did see any roadworkers or equipment, and everyone else was passing us, so eventually I sped up to what Dingbat said the limit normally is.
We are now at Twentynine Palms, which is basically a five mile stretch of fast-food restaurants with a few stores thrown in.
